Lately, it has become common to receive a notice on the computer screen that says you are infected with viruses and spyware. The premise is to get you to purchase their solution to get rid of the infections. The ultimate purpose, however is to get ahold of your credit card number.

If you should receive one of these notices, here is what you should attempt to do:

  • Do not click the mouse. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL on the keyboard. This should load the Task Manager. If it does not, select Task Manager from the menu.
  • Locate and highlight “iexplore.exe”,  “firefox.exe”, “safari.exe”, or “chrome.exe”,  depending on your browser in the list
  • Then press the “End Process” button. Your internet browser and the fake alert should close.
  • Go to the “Spyware Utilities” folder located on your desktop (or download them from the links to your right) and update and run “MalwareBytes” first. Then update and run the rest of the spyware utilities. Don’t forget to delete everything the programs find.
